Holistic Thermal Management in E-Vehicles - GaTE

The achievable range of electric vehicles is a key factor for their attractiveness. In the cluster project “Ganzeinheitliches Thermomanagement im E-Fahrzeug – GaTE (Holistic Thermal Management in E-Vehicles)” the companies Behr, Bosch, Daimler and sitronic, together with the Research Institute for Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines “Forschungsinstitut für Kraftfahrwesen und Fahrzeugmotoren Stuttgart (FKFS)”, under the leadership of Behr are exploring an optimized thermal management system for electric vehicles. The aim is to minimize the electric power requirements for vehicle air conditioning and the temperature control of the drive components compared to current solutions. This approach will significantly increase the range, in particular under winter conditions. The project is funded with 2.9 Million Euro over three years by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research “Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF)” within the framework of the Cluster of Excellence “Electromobility South-West”.

 

In GaTE the research of an efficient cooling and air conditioning system is based on the investigation of an indirect heat-pump for cooling fluid with an optimized valve concept. Thereby a reliable, cost-effective and energy-efficient air conditioning of the passenger cabin is possible. The system costs are kept low by a modular design strategy, applicable both to new and to conventional drive systems. A further reduction of the drive power and thus potential decrease of the battery costs of this system can be achieved, among other things, by an increase of the portion of circulated air. The portion of circulated air is the ratio of re-circulated air to fresh air. However, due to the recirculation of the air the moisture emission of the passengers is removed to a lesser extent. The resulting higher tendency to fogging on the windows of the passenger cabin is detected by a novel fogging detector and thus free visibility and safety is guaranteed.

 

The GaTE project supports the cluster strategy by a more efficient use of the available energy, reduction of the vehicle costs as well as an increase of comfort and safety and contributes to the targets of the BMBF to make Germany a leading provider in electromobility.
