Vehicle aeroacoustics wind tunnel

The vehicle aeroacoustics wind tunnel at FKFS, modernized in 2014, is one of the most modern of its kind in Europe for aerodynamic testing of passenger cars, vans and racing cars. In addition to acoustic methods, other extensive testing options are available for measuring forces, pressures and speeds, as well as for air flow visualization.


The vehicle aeroacoustics wind tunnel has a horizontal routing of air flow with an open free-flow jet test section (Göttingen-type wind tunnel). In order to represent the air flow conditions of a vehicle driving on a road surface as realistically as possible. The test is simulated with turning wheels and moving ground in the wind tunnel. This is done using a 5-belt system, consisting of a middle moving belt and four wheel drive units, combined with different boundary layer conditioning-systems.
