For heat protection tests, the engine compartment and exhaust system, as well as the air flow around them, are significant. At FKFS, in addition to experimental trials in the thermal wind tunnel, highly modern RANS and Lattice-Boltzmann methods are used for simulation.
To calculate part temperatures, 3D programs, such as PowerTHERM®, are usually used for simulating heat conduction and radiation. An example is the calculation of the temperature distribution on engine mountings directly next to an exhaust system. Via suitable interfaces, convective heat flows from the CFD calculation can be transferred to the thermal solver cell-by-cell.
