In close partnership with industry and small and medium-sized companies, the FKFS is researching the design of retrofit solutions so that electricity can be used for the powertrains of vehicles with internal combustion engines. One example is the research project called "ELENA", which is sponsored by the BMVBS (Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development).
In cooperation with the IVK, the FKFS provides for the transfer of information in training and teaching. At the University of Stuttgart, it supports the student project called "E-Smart", where students of automotive and engine technology, convert a smart car into an electric vehicle by using a retrofit kit, and then take measurements and make improvements.
