Visit from SWR in the Thermal Wind Tunnel

Yesterday, the SWR visited the Thermal Wind Tunnel at the FKFS. A camera team was filming a report for the SWR Marktcheck TV show. It was not about vehicles, which are usually tested in the Thermal Wind Tunnel, but about sunshades.

The SWR brought along four different brands of parasols and wanted to know which one was the most stable. Marktcheck answers questions consumer protection on various topics – just in time for the start of summer, it was all about home and garden. Also gardening expert Volker Kugel came along. Our FKFS team set up each sunshade in the Thermal Wind Tunnel one after the other and simulated an individual storm for each. The best parasol withstood 80 km/h winds! At such wind speeds, in real life roofs can be blown off and tree branches can break. However, the Thermal Wind Tunnel could have withstood more than three times as much as the sunshades, as it can simulate wind speeds of up to 250 km/h.

Thank you very much for the visit from SWR, it was a refreshing change from our daily work! Don't miss the show on July 23 at 8.15 p.m. to find out which brand sells the most stable sunshade!
