Load Profiles

Against the backdrop of progressively stringent legal requirements for emissions and carbon dioxide, new types of vehicle drives (electric or hybrid), new mobility models (car sharing or intermodality) and autonomous driving, knowledge about real-life daily driving on the road is increasingly important compared to the endurance runs driven by test drivers in development vehicles. FKFS has a great deal of experience in determining load profiles of this kind. All kinds of approaches are used here. For example, data loggers in end customer vehicles or vehicle fleets, measurement run studies with a representative group of test subjects on a circuit representative of driving in Germany – right through to determining load collectives using traffic simulations of traffic scenarios which do not yet exist in reality, e.g. scenarios with a high proportion of autonomous vehicles, or places which are too far away for real measurements.

Application-related Driving Cycles

Vehicle drive load is often determined using comprehensive series of measurement runs. This results in a large quantity of measured speed profiles, which, due to their duration, cannot be reproduced on a roller dynamometer or an engine test bench.

At FKFS, we have developed a procedure whereby driving cycles can be derived from this extensive measurement data which reproduce the load collective of the overall measurement series for a sensible duration. In addition to the speed profiles, a suitable altitude profile is also generated to appropriately depict the required drive powers.

The FKFS Circuit

The FKFS Circuit

The 60 km Stuttgart circuit was defined 10 years ago in cooperation with Robert Bosch GmbH. This circuit is representative for driving in Germany. Comparisons of the route parameters with statistical data prove continuously that the circuit is an excellent approximation of the distribution of road categories, topography and the speed profile. The matching of these parameters is absolutely essential to achieve useful results in energetic investigations of all kinds.

FKFS regularly conducts scientifically-validated series of tests on the circuit, for all kinds of questions. Several OEMs and automotive supplier companies also use the circuit for their own tests.
