Project completed: RABus ends after more than 4.5 years

Today, 30 June, 2025, marks the end of the RABus project - real-world laboratory for automated bus operation in public transport in urban and rural areas - after more than four and a half years of intensive research, testing and collaboration.

As the consortium leader, we at FKFS would like to thank everyone who has been on this journey with us:

  • The project partners (Stadtverkehr Friedrichshafen/Stadtwerk am See, Regionalverkehr Alb-Bodensee, Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH, Institut für Verkehrswesen, ZF Mobility Solutions) for their trusting and committed cooperation
  • The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport for its funding and support
  • The associated partners, local councils, the urban development company, the cities and municipalities
  • All test subjects who took part in the project in recent months
  • Other projects with which we were able to exchange technical information
  • Transport associations, clubs and political representatives who have supported the project
  • The Universities, colleges and research institutions that have provided impetus
  • ... and many other participants, without whom this project would not have been possible to such a high degree of depth.

A key finding from the real-world laboratories was that many people experienced automated vehicles for the first time through RABus, which not only allowed them to familiarize themselves with the technology, but also alleviated their concerns. By sharing their positive experiences, many participants helped to build trust in automated driving far beyond the actual number of people taking part in a ride.

In the coming months, we will compile and process the results, experiences and lessons learned from the project.

The final project report is expected to be published in spring 2026 – we will keep you informed about the publication date.

Many thanks to everyone who has helped shape the RABus journey!
